About Product

The oily flesh of the Mackerel is ideally suited for smoking. The smoky aroma complements the rich flavour, making smoked Mackerel one of the most popular smoked fish.

Mackerel is highly recommended by health experts as an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, selenium and Vitamin B12. Oily fish like mackerel should be eaten at least once a week. Mackerel has a greyish-cream oily, flesh with a rich, intense flavour and is ideal for grilling, frying and baking. The flesh remains moist and soft when cooked. The fish bones are easy to remove.

Fresh mackerel is best really fresh and must be kept chilled. Headless Mackerels and fillets store better than whole fish.

Mackerel is one of the most popular table fish, both fresh and smoked and a highly valued catch. The competition among fishermen is so fierce that there is talk of a 'mackerel war' over the fishing quotas between Scotland and Iceland/Faroe Isles. Our mackerel is from Scottish fishing boats, working within EU quotas.

The Mackerel is a smaller relative of Tuna and is found in large shoals in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean. They grow 30-50cm long and can reach 800g, although 200-500g are more common. The legal minimum landing size is 30cm. Their torpedo shaped body has 'zebra' stripes in iridescent green and blue on the back and a sparkling silver belly.

Available fresh from July to mid February, depending on quota levels.

Packaging InformationPackaging Information

Your meat order is kept cool in transit because we either use an insulated expanded polystyrene box, or a recyclable tough corrugated cardboard box which is foil lined and insulated with bubble wrap. Both boxes are leak-proof and sturdy.

To keep your delivery cool, it is packed along with specially designed ice packs. Our ice packs are made with a frozen water-based gel, which keeps the meat at the correct temperature for up to 48 hours. When the ice does melt, it stays as a gel, which prevents the delivery becoming wet.
