Lettuce, tomato, onion

Lettuce and tomato add a nice bit of crunch to a burger in a bun, and the onion also adds texture as well as a bit of flavour. While some may prefer their burgers without it, there is a reason that these often come as standard.

Cheese

Sometimes you just cannot beat a classic. For many people, a burger simply isn’t a proper burger without a bit of cheese on top, from a bit of cheddar to Monterey Jack.

Bacon

Bacon is a great addition to a burger, the flavours work very well together and if fried until crispy also adds a little bit of texture.

Burger Sauce

Most restaurants have their own particular recipe for burger sauce, but the simplest concoction you can make at home is a mix of mayonnaise, American style mustard, and ketchup in equal measure. The result is a sauce that is creamy, tangy and just a little bit sweet. Simply perfect on top of a burger.

BBQ Sauce

Another very popular burger sauce is BBQ sauce, which adds a sweetness and smokiness to a burger. Simply perfect over flame grilled burgers made on the BBQ.

Bacon and Cheese

Why just stop at one topping? Bacon and cheese are fantastic together and really elevate a burger into something special.

Brie and Bacon

A variation of a bacon and cheese topping that takes some inspiration from French cuisine, the result is a creamy, salty, tangy and crispy burger topping that is just a little bit different while still appealing to a wide audience.

Bacon and Egg

Bacon and egg are fantastic together, so why not have them on top of a burger? This ‘breakfast burger’ has been growing in popularity over the years, especially with a perfectly cooked egg that is ever so slightly runny and crispy bacon.

Pulled Pork

Pulled pork is increasing in popularity as a burger topping, and adds plenty of sweet and salty goodness.

Haggis

Adding a little bit of a Scottish twist on to your burger makes it instantly more filling and spicy, and any excuse to add a bit of our own family recipe haggis in our cooking is a win for us.

Black Pudding

If you are not too sure about adding haggisblack pudding also makes a fantastic topping on a burger, adding a lot of flavour while being very filling.

Onion Rings

Popular in America, onions rings as burger toppings have increasingly been making an appearance in the UK. Onions add a lot of flavour, and perfectly fried onion rings also add a fantastic amount of texture.

Caramelised Onions

Caramelised onions are very popular on burgers, and they add just the right amount of sweetness to a burger without overpowering the flavour of the burger itself.

Goat’s Cheese and Caramelised Onions

Goat’s cheese and caramelized onions make a perfect pair. The sweetness of caramelized onions makes goes perfectly with the creaminess and slight tanginess found in goat’s cheese. And they are even better when on top of a burger.

Guacamole

Avocados are also extremely popular in a variety of dishes, and burgers are no different. Avocados add a wonderful mix of creaminess and freshness to a dish. If mashed together with salt, garlic, lime, and chilli flakes you get a fantastic guacamole that makes an excellent condiment.

Cheese and Jalapenos

This option takes a bit of inspiration from Mexican cuisine and has a tasty combination of cheese with the sharp, sour, spicy addition of jalapenos.

Salsa

Similar to a burger relish but with a little bit more of a kick. Another option that takes a little bit of inspiration from Mexican cuisine is to add a touch of salsa on top of your burger. Tomatoes work well with burgers as they add a little bit of sweetness and acidity, and the peppers in the salsa will also add a bit of heat. You could also combine the cheese, jalapenos, guacamole, and salsa together for a Mexican style fusion dish.

Feta, red onion, tomato

This topping is based on a Greek salad. Feta works very well with the sweetness and acidity found in tomatoes and red oinion, and on top of a burger the combination is crispy, tangy, and creamy in equal measure.

Basil, parmesan, pesto

This Italian inspired combination is fantastic on top of burgers, adding just the right amount of richness from the pest and parmesan while the basil adds not of freshness.

Chorizo and Manchego

Chorizo and Manchego are classic products from Spain, and on top of a burger the chorizo adds a delightful warmth while the Manchego adds an underlying sweetness.
